Setting up UniMail on your mobile

This page provides step-by-step instructions on how to set up your Unimail email account on your iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Phone or BlackBerry.  Ths information is taken from Microsoft's website, and customised for the University's Unimail settings.

Before you begin...

You must have already successfully accessed your Unimail account.  The first time you sign in to Outlook Web App using a browser registers your account. Connecting to your e-mail account through a mobile phone will fail if you haven't registered your account through Outlook Web App. After you sign in to your account, sign out. Then try to connect using your mobile phone.

POP and IMAP...

If you wish to connect using POP or IMAP methods, the settings you will need are:

Incoming Mail (IMAP) server:  outlook.office365.com   port 993  requires SSL - yes

Incoming Mail (POP) server:   outlook.office365.com   port 995  requires SSL - yes

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server:   smtp.office365.com   port 587   requires SSL - yes

Also - for undergrduates, both email address and username are the same - for example u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk

For postrgraduate researchers (PGRs) with an @hud.ac.uk email address, then email address and username are different - for example first.last@hud.ac.uk (email address) and u1234567@pgr.hud.ac.uk (username).

Setting up UniMail on your iOS device

  1. Go to your device's Settings, scroll down to Mail, tap Accounts>Add Account.  NOTE: if you have not updated to iOS10, go to your device's Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account.
  2. Select Exchange.
  3. Enter your full e-mail address - for example, u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk (students) or first.last@hud.ac.uk (postgrad researchers)
  4. Enter your password.
  5. Enter name/description.
  6. Tap Next.
  7. If you're prompted to enter server settings, enter the following and tap Next.
    • Email: your full e-mail address - for example, u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk (students) or first.last@hud.ac.uk (postgrad researchers)
    • Server: outlook.office365.com
    • Username: the name you use to login to Unimail - for example, u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk (students) or u1234567@pgr.hud.ac.uk (postgrad reasearchers)
    • Password: email account password.
    • NOTE: check everything is spelled correctly.
  8. If permissions are requested, tap Yes.  Then choose the apps you want your email account to sync with your iOS device and tap Save.
  9. NOTE: If you're prompted to create a passcode, tap Continue and type a numeric passcode.  If you're prompted and don't set up a passcode, you can't view this account on your device.  But you can set up a passcode later in your settings.
  10. Your email account is now ready to use with the iOS Mail App.

Setting up UniMail on Android devices

Using Android mail:

  1. You set this up as an Exchange type account.
  2. Email address: for example u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk (students) or first.last@hud.ac.uk (postgrad researchers).
  3. Domain\username: for example \u1234567@hud.ac.uk (students) or \u1234567@pgr.hud.ac.uk (postgrad researchers)
  4. Password: usual password.
  5. Exchange server: smtp.office365.com
  6. Make sure the 'Use secure connection (SSL)' is checked.

 Using Outlook app:

  1. Open Outlook for Android.  If you haven't already, download and install the mobile app from Google Play Store.
  2. Go to Settings > Add account > Add Email Account. Note: First time using Outlook for Android - just tap Get Started.
  3. Enter your full e-mail address - for example u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk (students) or u1234567@pgr.hud.ac.uk (postgrad researchers).
  4. Tap Add account.
  5. Enter your password and tap Sign In.
  6. Tap Yes or Allow to give Outlook parmission to sync calendar, contacts, etc.
  7. Oulook should connect to your account.

 

Setting up UniMail on your Windows 7 or 8 mobile device

  1. On Start, swipe left to the App list, select Settings, and then select email + accounts.
  2. If you have a Windows Phone 8 or 8.1, tap Add an account > Exchange
  3. If you ahve a Windows phone 7 or 7.5, tap Add an account > Outlook.
  4. Enter your e-mail address (for example, u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk or first.last@hud.ac.uk for postgrad researchers) and password and then select Sign in. Windows Phone will try to set up your e-mail account automatically.
  5. If the phone finds your account settings, your email, calendar and contacts will be synched to your phone.

If there's a problem, then

  1. try Settings > email + account > add an account > other account
  2. Windows phone will try to set up your email automatically, but if it can't, make sure the e-mail address and password are correct, and then select Try again. If setup completes successfully, skip to step 4.
  3. If your e-mail account can’t be set up automatically, select Advanced, and then select Internet email.
    You'll need to enter the following information:
    1. Account name This is a descriptive name for your account eg UniMail
    2. Your name Type your name as you want it to appear when you send e-mail messages from your phone.
    3. Incoming email server This is the incoming e-mail server for your account enter “outlook.office365.com”.
    4. Account type This can be either POP3 or IMAP4.
    5. User name This is what you use to login to Unimail - for example, u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk (students) or first.last@pgr.hud.ac.uk (postgrad researchers).
    6. Password This is the password for your e-mail account.
    7. Outgoing (SMTP) email server This is the outgoing email server name “smtp.office365.com”.
    8. Select Advanced and select the boxes Require SSL for incoming email and Require SSL for outgoing email.
  4. Select Sign in.

Setting up Unimail on a Windows 10 device

  1. The first time you open the mail app, you'll see a Welcomew page.  Chose Add account to get started.  Otherwise, at the bottom of the left navigation pane, choose Settings (or select the three dots at the bottom of the page to access settings) then select Manage Accounts > Add account.
  2. Select Exchange.
  3. Enter your full email address (for example, u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk) and password.
  4. Windows will try to set up your account automatically. 
    • If it is successful, select Done.  Your data will start synching.
    •  If you receive the message We couldn't find your account. Make sure that the email address is correct and then try again" check that you are entering your details correctly.  Select Try again three times and the button changes to Advanced

Advanced setup information:

  1. Account name - the name you will see in the left pane of the Mail app.
  2. Your name - the name that your message recipients will see when you email them.
  3. Incoming email server  - enter outlook.office365.com
  4. Account type - Choose POP3 or IMAP4.
  5. Email address - This is your full email address, for example u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk (students) or first.last@hud.ac.uk (postgrad researchers)
  6. User name - This is what you use to login to Unimail - for example, u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk (students) or first.last@pgr.hud.ac.uk (postgrad researchers).
  7. Password - Enter your email account password.
  8. Outgoing (SMTP) email server - smtp.office365.com
  9. By default, all four checkboxes at the bottom of the window will be checked. Most email accounts don't require any changes to these options.
  10. Once you've entered the required information, choose Sign in > Done.

Setting up UniMail on your Blackberry 7 or earlier device

  1. From the BlackBerry home screen, click BlackBerry Setup > Set up Internet E-mail > Add An Email Account.
  2. Type your e-mail address - for example, u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk (students) or first.last@hud.ac.uk (postgrad researchers) and password, and then click Next.
  3. Your BlackBerry will try to set up your e-mail account automatically. If setup completes successfully, skip to the next step. If your e-mail account can't be configured automatically, do the following:
    1. Click I will provide the settings to add this email account.
    2. Scroll down, and then click Next.
    3. Select Internet Service Provider Email (POP/IMAP), and then click Next.
    4. Type your full e-mail address - for example, u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk (students) or first.last@pgr.hud.ac.uk (postgrad researchers).
    5. Scroll down and type the name of your e-mail server outlook.office365.com . Click Next.
    6. Enter the name of the outgoing server smtp.office365.com
  4. Click OK to complete the setup.

 

Setting up Unimail on your Blackberry 10 device

  1. On the home sceen, select Settings.
  2. On the system settings page, select Accounts.  If you haven't yet created any accounts, select Add Account.
  3. On the Add Account page, select Email, Calendar, and Contacts.
  4. Type your email address - for example, u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk (students) or first.last@hud.ac.uk (postgrad researchers).
  5. Select Next.
  6. Type your password and select Next. The Looking up connection information message displays.  Your device tries to set up your email account automatically. 
    • If it finds your connection information, specify the information you want to synchronise with your account, and select Done.  You will see your account listed on the Accounts list.  Go to the Blackberry Hub to access your email account.
    • If it can't find your connection information, you'll see a message recommending that you use the advanced setup steps - see below.

Blackberry 10 advanced setup

  1. On the home sceen, select Settings.
  2. On the system settings page, select Accounts.  If you haven't yet created aty accounts, select Add Account.
  3. On the Add Account page, select Email, Calendar, and Contacts. Then select the menu icon beneath the Email address box to access advanced setup options.
  4. On the Advanced Setup page, select Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.
  5. Enter the settings for the account - some of the settings may already be entered for you:
    • Description - give your account a name
    • Domain - leave this blank
    • Email address - your email address (for example, u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk)
    • Username - this is what you use to login to Unimail - for example, u1234567@unimail.hud.ac.uk (students) or first.last@pgr.hud.ac.uk (postgrad researchers).
    • Password - your password
    • Server address - outlook.office365.com
  6. Select Next. The Checking for supported services and policy information message displays.
  7. On the next page, specify the information you want to sync, and then select Done.  The Saving and verifying your settings message displays.
  8. If your account was set up, you will see your account listed on the Accounts list.  Go to the Blackberry Hub to access your email account.
  9. If you see the message that your account cannot be authenticated with your service provider, click OK, click Previous, and then verify that your settings are correct.
