A lifelong passion for baking cakes was the recipe for Allison Whitmarsh’s new business idea, ProperMaid, which offers traditional cakes baked with the finest ingredients available.
Back at University after a 20-year career in the food industry, Allison rediscovered her taste for baking as a way to earn extra cash while she studied.
Allison benefited from the on-going support and advice from the University’s Enterprise Team. After graduating, she attended one of the Graduate Entrepreneurship Boot Camps where her business ideas really began to take shape.
Allison was ready to launch her business two months after graduation and after only a year of trading she had grown sufficiently to require four part-time employees and a move to new premises with a bakery and a shop selling her delicious cakes, such as chocolate and beetroot and lemon and poppy seed with homemade lemon curd.
Being named as New Business of the Year by the Huddersfield Examiner really was the icing on the cake!
I am always conscious and proud of the fact that The Enterprise Team was always so supportive in my early stages, but what I have been most impressed with is that their support has continued long after I completed my studies at the University of Huddersfield; for that I am extremely grateful."
