Three Minute Thesis (3MT)

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®)

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition where doctoral researchers have just three minutes to deliver an engaging presentation on their thesis topic, its originality and significance. It was first developed by the University of Queensland in 2008 and is now a worldwide phenomenon. Each participating institution holds their own competition and the winners gain a place in the national semi-final.

Why enter?

Taking part in 3MT helps develop academic, presentation and research communication skills and supports PGRs in effectively explaining their research to a non-specialist audience. Being able to explain a thesis topic clearly and concisely is also excellent preparation for the viva. There are also some fantastic prizes to be won! As well as an entry into the national semi-final, the Huddersfield winner receives £500, the runner-up receives £250 and the people's choice receives £100.

Who is eligible?

To enter the Huddersfield 3MT® competition you must:

  • Be currently registered on a doctoral programme at the University of Huddersfield.
  • Not have had your viva by the Huddersfield final date.
  • Be available for training, the Huddersfield semi-final and final date.
  • Be available to participate in the national competition if applicable.
  • Agree to your presentation being recorded on video.
