How to use recruitment agencies
Recruitment agencies are playing an increasingly important role in helping graduates find graduate opportunities. Along with applying for vacancies on our JobShop (as well as other websites) and using your own network of contacts (including LinkedIn), recruitment agencies should be part of the mix of vacancy sources which you use.
Reasons why you should consider using recruitment agencies
- Some graduate employers only advertise their vacancies through recruitment agencies.
- Some specialised roles and sectors make significant use of agencies to fill openings.
- You may gain an insight into niche careers if you are supported by a specialist agency.
- Agencies that focus upon meeting the recruitment needs of different sorts of companies which are all in the same geographical area, can help you to access opportunities in that locality; especially if you are looking for a stepping-stone job to gain experience before moving onto a full graduate role.
Things to remember when using recruitment agencies
- In the UK reputable recruitment agencies usually should be free for you to use as a student/graduate (though some may charge for additional services like CV checking).
- Make a good impression (if you meet them, dress like you would for a job interview and have a professional CV).
- Remember that agents may not be familiar with university courses, so be proactively in selling the relevance of your qualifications and skill set.
- Keep on their radar and build a relationship.
- Research and pick those that are relevant to your plans.
- Be realistic: some will lead to productive relationships, others probably won't.
- Don't put all your eggs in one basket! You should still look for vacancies and use your contacts and not rely upon agencies to solve your career problems.
