What criteria means a fail?
May Proceed
You have passed all modules for this academic year and you can now progress to the next stage/year of your course.
Decision Postponed/Resits
You have been referred or deferred (you have approved extenuating circumstances - ECs) in one or more modules and you will need to submit this work in the resubmission period and by the final resubmission date confirmed in your results email.
Decision Postponed to next CAB
Your progression decision may be postponed due to the following reasons:
1. You have results that cannot be confirmed because of an ongoing process investigation (such as Fitness to Practice) or an academic misconduct investigation.
2. You have passed all assessments submitted so far but you have outstanding work or placement hours (sometimes indicated by a late mark - L) which has not been completed due to deadlines that fall after the course assessment meeting that considers your results, or which cannot be marked in advance of the meeting.
The results for the outstanding work and your updated progression decision will be confirmed at a future course assessment meeting.
You should submit any outstanding work for the deadlines that you have already been given unless you have been advised to submit for the resubmission deadline.
Confirmation of your award
If you have passed all the modules for your course, your final award classification will be displayed.
If you have failed some assessments and have no more attempts available to you or are withdrawn from the course for any other reason but have enough credits to receive an exit award, this result will be confirmed.
May Proceed with Trails
You can progress into the next year of your course but you will need to repeat the assessments of the module that you have failed. You will not normally need to attend teaching for the trailed module or repeat any assessments you have passed in the failed module. You will submit your assessments with the rest of the cohort.
May Proceed with Resits
You can progress into the next year of the course but you have outstanding refer or defer assessments to complete by the resubmission date confirmed in your results release email.
In exceptional cases where passing your outstanding work is a condition of your continued progression, the Course Administration team will email you with these details and what will need to happen if you do not pass.
May Not Progress
You have not passed enough credits to progress to the next year of your course or complete your course, and you have outstanding refers or defers to retrieve only (no failed modules). You will need to complete these in the next academic year but will not be expected to reregister or attend timetabled sessions unless advised by your course/module leader. There are no fees for outstanding defer or refer work completed in the next academic year.
Exceptions are made for students retrieving referred or deferred modules where they need to attend timetabled sessions such lab, clinical sessions or placements. If this is your situation, you will need to reregister on your course as a repeat year student so that you can attend these sessions. However, there is no fee payment required for refer or defer work despite your status as a repeat year student.
Learners undertaking an apprenticeship programme are required to discuss this with their course leader and employer.
Repeat Year
Repeat year means that you need to repeat any failed modules or assessments before you can either progress into the next academic year or level or graduate. You will not repeat any modules or assessments you have already passed.
You are expected to attend all timetabled sessions for the modules you are repeating and you will be charged fees for any modules that you are repeating that you failed in the previous academic year.
If there are reasons why you do not wish to attend, you will need apply for special permission from the Director of Registry within 10 working days, providing evidence for your request. For information and how to apply see Regulations for taught students, section 1.15
In addition to repeating modules that you have previously failed, you may also be retrieving outstanding refers or defers form the previous year. You do not normally need to attend any timetabled sessions for this refer or defer work unless the module requires lab or clinical work or is a placement.
If you are studying on a Postgraduate funded course you may need to secure confirmation of repeat year funding from your employer prior to reregistering.
Learners undertaking an apprenticeship programme are required to discuss this with their course leader and employer.
Fail
You have failed and will be withdrawn from the course for any of the following reasons:
- Undergraduate students/apprentices only: you have achieved less than 50 credits in this academic year/ at this academic level (eg foundation level) and have failed the course.
- Postgraduate and undergraduate students/apprentices: You have failed the second full attempt at a module (accumulated failure), or a module that must be passed and cannot be repeated and have therefore failed the course.
- You have failed to achieve credit in two academic years and will be withdrawn from the course.
- You have failed one or more modules and are unable to return to complete any outstanding attempts on your modules because you have reached the maximum period of registration for your course. Regulation 7.2.5
- Postgraduate funded short courses: You have failed your first full attempt (main attempt and refer attempt). If you can secure repeat year funding from your employer or if you choose to self-fund, then you may re-enrol on the course but your marks will be capped at the pass mark in line with University regulations for repeat modules.
All failed and withdrawn students will receive recognition of any credits they have achieved which may include an exit award.
Regulations for awards (taught courses) covering failure of a module can be found in Section 7
