What is the PRES?

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) has been developed by Advance HE in consultation with the sector. The PRES is a national survey conducted by institutions across the UK and globally. The survey takes around 15 minutes to complete.

The survey includes a standard set of questions, as well as opportunities for free-text responses. 

The survey focuses on PGR experiences of:

• Supervision
• Resources (including space and facilities)
• Research culture and community
• Progress and assessment
• Responsibilities
• Support
• Research Skills
• Professional development
• Overall experience
• PGR motivation

Why should I take part?

PRES is your chance to tell us your thoughts about your experience of being a postgraduate researcher. The results help us compare how we are doing with other institutions, to make changes that will improve what we do in future and to keep doing the things that you value. This will help improve the experience of PGRs like you in the future.

Your survey response is confidential to the team processing the results and no reporting outside of this team will identify any individual. Any results communicated more widely will be anonymised.

If that’s going to be too much to put in I’d suggest just leaving the last sentence off completely. It will be made clear in the initial invitation emails anyway.

How can I take part?

When the survey opens, every eligible PGR will be sent an invitation email containing a personal link to the survey. We use personal links so that we know who has already responded and who to send reminders to.

How we listen to your Student Voice

• Advance HE provides a benchmarking report to each university
• The multiple-choice and free-text responses of University of Huddersfield PGRs are analysed within the University.
• Both are used to make recommendations to improve University programmes and processes
• Results and recommendations are also discussed at Graduate Council. 

We may also explain what has happened in response to previous surveys in PGR newsletters or by using other communication avenues.
