Hoyer Management Development Programme

Our unique 3-year programme of structured rotating placements, training and development and senior leadership mentoring, really sets up our graduates for success as they move into Location Transport Manager or a similar management positions and beyond within 3 years

Our Management Development Scheme provides graduates with first-hand experience of managing and leading people, as well as operational responsibility and accountability from an early stage. 

The Scheme 

• Starting salary of £28,000 (with increments during the programme subject to performance) 
• Join as a ‘Management Trainee’, completing placements within the Huddersfield Control Centre (HCC)*, a Support Function (typically Project Support or Fleet Management) and field locations supporting a Location Transport Manager 
• Hands-on experience in a variety of Operational roles and involvement in business-wide projects with autonomy and responsibility from an early stage  
• Operational leadership experience in a rapidly growing and fast paced Unionised environment
• Structured training and development
• Exposure to key operational areas to develop your management capabilities 

*Please note that the HCC placement involves shift work including nights and weekends. A shift allowance is payable on top of the basic salary whilst working in this department.   

Person Specification  

You will have an outgoing personality and be capable of influencing others. You will have the ability to challenge the status quo and drive improvements as part of a team and on your own. You will have a flexible approach, be highly analytical and be comfortable with numbers, as detailed financial appraisal is an essential requirement. You will have a strong determination to succeed in a demanding environment and be able to demonstrate business acumen and an ability to think on your feet. 

Selection Criteria  

• Strong English/Maths skills  
• On track to achieve a 2:1 degree (preferably Business or Logistics) 
• Strong IT skills (Microsoft packages)

Ellen Dewin - Management Trainee

After graduating with a 1st BA (Hons) degree in Business Management with Supply Chain from the University of Huddersfield, I knew that my future would be in Logistics and Supply Chain. My degree and previous year’s placement had given me a good insight into the management of supply chains as well as the importance of planning and controlling operations. Hoyer’s recruitment process stood out from the rest and I was attracted to the programme which gives you a high level of responsibility from an early stage and a hands-on experience in many different key operational areas.  

I completed my first 8-month placement out in the field at the Kingsbury Terminal, supporting the Location Transport Manager. This role was very fast-paced; I learnt how to deal with various operational challenges including investigating any incidents that occurred. This placement allowed me to engage with the drivers and properly understand what they do and the issues they face on a day-to-day basis. Liaising with numerous departments such as Planning, Fleet Management and HCC enabled me to gain a detailed insight into the operation.  

I am now undertaking my support function placement in the Projects Support Team. On day one I was given my own project, running a Document Control Programme. Although leading a project seemed quite daunting at first, it allowed me to take full ownership and with support from my manager, I have succeeded in ensuring that a single, up-to-date master version of each of the company’s key documents and templates is easily accessible, with clear version control. I am now leading a project to establish a Truck Valeting Programme across all vehicles, co-ordinating with the Fleet Management Team to incorporate this into the current Service Schedule to ensure our driver colleagues have the best possible and safe working environment. I have definitely developed my multi-tasking skills within this role. 

I am soon moving on to my next placement within HCC where I will be undertaking the role of Controller and will also gain experience as part of the Resource Team. The responsibilities I’ve been given throughout my time at Hoyer have gone beyond my expectations. I’ve been exposed to various situations and given the opportunity to work with many people across the business. People genuinely want to see you succeed and it shows from the amount of support given, be it  from your manager, colleagues or mentor. I’m looking forward to lots of new challenges and progressing my career with Hoyer, wherever it will take me!
