Access University Software Anywhere with 'Remote’
What is Remote?
Remote is the University of Huddersfield’s remote IT application service. It allows you to run specialist university applications directly from your own PC, Mac, laptop, or tablet - without needing a VPN or a campus PC.
(Note: You may also hear about UniDesktop. This is a separate service used for highly specific applications. You only need to use UniDesktop if your lecturer explicitly directs you to do so.)
How to Access Remote
You can access the service whichever way works best for you:
Option 1: The Windows App (Recommended)
- Search for and open the Windows App on your device. (If you don't have it, download it from your device's App Store or the Microsoft Store).
- Sign in using your standard University email and password.
- Your assigned apps will appear directly in the client window, or you can find them in your Start menu under UoH Remote (RD).
Option 2: Web Browser (Quick Access)
- Open your preferred browser and go to https://remote.hud.ac.uk
- Sign in with your University email and password.
- If prompted, click to "Allow access to local resources" and re-enter your password if asked.
Using the Service
- Tailored for You: You will only see the applications that have been assigned to you based on your specific course modules.
- Available Applications: Software available through Remote includes IBM SPSS Statistica, Minitab, Visual Studio Code, and more.
- Accessibility: Need to adjust the display, cursor, or colour settings? Simply go to Control Panel > Ease of Access within your Remote session.
Top Tips for the Best Experience
- Use local apps when possible: Avoid running standard apps like Microsoft Office or Teams through Remote if you already have them installed directly on your own device. They will run faster locally.
- Be patient on the first launch: Your very first time opening an app might take a little longer than usual due to the initial session setup. This is completely normal.
- Logging out: When you are finished, simply close the app. Your session will automatically disconnect and securely time out after a short period of inactivity.
