Refer/resit and extenuating circumstances (EC) queries

What is a resit? What is a refer? 

Resit or refer means you have not passed your module or assessments of your module and you will get another attempt to pass these assessments. If you pass the module overall after the refer attempt, the result will be capped at the pass mark.  

Resubmission dates and Exam resits

The resubmission period is usually up to three weeks after the date of results release. Referred/deferred work must be submitted by the final resubmission date given in your results release email unless you have been given another date by your module leader or Brightspace.  

If you have resit exams, you will be sent the resit exam timetable or details will be confirmed by your course team. 

If you are referred in assessments other than coursework or exams included in the timetable, your module leader will advise you of the date of your reassessment. 

If you are in any doubt of the reassessment/resubmission date of your referred/deferred assessments, then contact your module leader for clarification.  

Can I change my resubmission date? 

The resubmission period and resit exam dates are set and cannot be changed. If you are unable to complete your work within the resubmission period or attend scheduled exams or other assessments, then you will need to apply for extenuating circumstances. 

If you can’t complete my refer work/attend resits

If you have a valid reason for missing the assessment deadline, you can submit an extenuating circumstances claim.   

If your EC is approved, you will need to submit outstanding work in the next resubmission period. 

If you defer a refer assessment, there will normally be one more submission date before the next academic year meaning you may be able to progress if you pass all modules required after this resubmission.   

For some courses (such as Nursing and Midwifery Studies) which confirm refer and placement results just before the start of their next academic year, deferring refer work means you will not have completed all your assessments by the start of the next academic year and you may not have enough credits to progress.  You may want to talk to your course leader or module leader initially to review your situation. 

What is a defer/deferral? What is an EC? 

A deferral is when your assessment deadline has been postponed until the next submission date due to having approved extenuating circumstances for the original assessment deadline.   

Extensions on referred coursework

Extensions are not permitted on referred or deferred work.  If you cannot complete your work by the refer submission date, you will need to apply for extenuating circumstances providing evidence to support your claim.

If your results have already been published through the MyResults page but you believe that your performance was adversely affected by extenuating circumstances, you should make a Results Appeal rather than an EC claim.  You will need to submit your result appeal within 10 days of the release of your results.  See regulation 8.3.8
