Faith Centre update - January 2022

Construction work on the new University Multi Faith Centre commenced on Monday 17 January 2022 on the area between T5, Edith Key Building and the Researcher Hub. This much needed facility will replace the aged, prefab Faith Centre building that currently sits off Queen Street South.

The project is due to complete in late Autumn 2022 and will provide a space for reflection for students and staff from all faiths and backgrounds. The 1,000sq m. two storey Faith Centre will include a Congregational Hall at the heart of the building, a community space, separate male and female Muslim prayer rooms, Christian and multi-faith room, separate male and female Wudhu rooms and a Chaplain's office. Additionally, the Faith Centre will incorporate learning and support areas, equipment store and accessible toilets.

The project will also include an extensive landscaping scheme that will create a fully pedestrianised zone from Joseph Priestley Building, past Bronte Lecture Theatres and the new Faith Centre to Barbara Hepworth Building.

The first few weeks of construction will concentrate on the creation of the site and erection of fencing.

Road closure on campus from Monday 25 July

Construction works on the Jo Cox - More in Common Centre and the surrounding landscaping scheme are progressing well, however we are taking advantage of the quieter period on campus over the summer break to give the main contractor, Morgan Sindall improved access, by closing the road between construction site and Edith Key/Researcher Hub. This will allow them to better progress works before students return to campus in September. This section of road will be closed from 7.00am on Monday 25 July until 5.00pm Friday 16 September (See map for details of closure and accessible routes)

Alternative pedestrian access will be maintained and will be clearly signed, using the path that runs behind Edith Key and Researcher Hub between 8.00am – 8.00pm daily. The Woodland Walkway along the canal from Barbara Hepworth to Schwann Building will also be available. Neither of these routes are however suitable for wheelchair users.

Wheelchair access for staff and students to the upper campus will be through the Barbara Hepworth Building, this will be clearly signed and mapped at the closure points. If you are a wheelchair user, you should already have been provided temporary swipe access to your staff/student card so you can gain access through the Barbara Hepworth Building. After 8.00pm alternative routes to Firth Street include via St Pauls Street, past Barbara Hepworth building to Queens Street, or across the bridge from Schwann towards Charles Sikes.
