eLearning - Safeguarding in Higher Education

Student Services provide an e-learning module Safeguarding in Higher Education which takes around 45 minutes to complete. This is hosted on LearnUpon and covers:

  • Legislation & Guidance
  • Recognising Abuse
  • Institutional Abuse
  • Responding to Abuse
  • Disclosure
  • Whistle Blowing
  • Prevent

The course is suitable for a wide range of University colleagues, and is particularly useful for:

  • Safeguarding Champions
  • School Guidance Staff
  • PATs
  • Staff involved in the delivery of Degree Apprenticeships
  • Learning Support Workers – supporting students with disabilities

Staff are required to be enrolled on the programme. If you have a group of staff you require to complete this unit please contact studentwellbeing@hud.ac.uk to request enrolment.

Management reports on completion rates can be requested through the DSOs, Emma Carpenter or Jo Mitchell, please email studentwellbeing@hud.ac.uk.

 

eLearning - Prevent Training

The University requires all staff complete elearning or a face-to-face briefing related to the Prevent Duty. e-Learning is hosted on LearnUpon and covers:

  • The scope of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act (2015) and its impact on higher education.
  • The process of radicalisation, definitions of extremism, the Channel process and the monitoring arrangements for compliance.

If you need to make a referral, or have a case requiring advice, please use the safeguarding referral form.

 

Supporting Student Mental Health session

Wellbeing Services provides a 2-hour introduction to Supporting Student Mental Health which covers:

  • Mental Health awareness
  • The principles of Choice, Confidentiality and Consent
  • How to refer

The course can be:

  • delivered online or face to face to staff groups.
  • focused and tailored towards particular groups of staff
  • integrated into existing staff meetings or training days

Mental Health First Aid England

A suite of courses through MHFA England approved trainers is available:

  • Half day awareness raising on mental health and challenging stigma
  • 2-day Mental Health First Aid course to enable colleagues to respond to those facing poor mental health. This course is particularly relevant for colleagues working in support and guidance roles who have a high volume of contact with students.

Workshop Raising Awareness of Prevent (WRAP)

Student Services works with Kirklees Council to deliver the Workshop Raising Awareness of Prevent (WRAP) which is facilitated by a member of staff from the Prevent Hub at Kirklees Council and takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete, depending on facilitator input and audience participation and size. WRAP is an interactive facilitated workshop centred on a package of video content which covers:

  • An introduction to Prevent
  • An explanation of Prevent within the wider safeguarding context
  • The process of radicalisation
  • How to identify when someone may be vulnerable to radicalisation
  • How to raise concerns
  • What support looks like in Kirklees

WRAP is recommended for staff who work in student support and guidance roles. Contact studentwellbeing@hud.ac.uk to arrange delivery and sign up for future sessions.
