How to book a tutorial appointment

I began my career at the University of Huddersfield as a PhD researcher, librarian and then Academic Skills Tutor, focusing on the creative and visual arts. With my background in English and linguistics, I enjoy inspiring a love of writing in its many forms and at every level of study (from undergraduate to PhD). I can help you develop structure, argument, and, ultimately, confidence in your own assignment writing, together with other skills to succeed, including referencing, critical thinking and reflective practice.

I have been working with students here at the University of Huddersfield since 2007 and before that I worked in various countries as a teacher of English for Academic Purposes, so I know what you need during your studies! I can help you to overcome the challenges that you may face when immersed in another environment – both academically and culturally. My interests include improving confidence and motivation, using sources effectively, improving academic vocabulary, critical thinking and reflection.

I started work at the University in 2007 as a lecturer in Behavioural Sciences and have a PhD in that area. I became an Academic Skills Tutor in 2009 (School of Human and Health Sciences) as I enjoy working with students to help them develop their academic skills. So, whether you are a foundation, intermediate, honours, masters or PhD student, I can work with you so that you can become your best academic self.

I began part-time teaching in Media Studies and English at the University of Huddersfield in 1994, and continued whilst I studied for my PhD. I have now been an AST for almost 20 years, working mainly in Media, English, History and Music. I thoroughly enjoy helping students to get the best possible results and my doctorate was centred on the ways that we can help students to reach or surpass the required standard by developing their individual strengths and overcoming any weaknesses.

I have worked at the University of Huddersfield since 2012, focussing on Academic Skills, English for Academic Purposes (with international students) and Teaching & Learning. I work with students at all stages of their academic career (from first year to PhD), so I can help you develop the skills you need to succeed in your studies. My interests include critical thinking, supporting work with effective research and referencing, academic writing techniques (including structure and vocabulary), and reflective learning.

I have worked as a language teacher and learning development tutor in the UK and abroad for many years and I’m pleased to have had the opportunity to support students from more than 50 countries. Developing the academic skills you need to succeed at university can seem daunting but is very doable and can lead to rewarding results! I am keen to help you communicate your ideas clearly in assignments and to develop your ‘critical thinking’ skills among other things.

I have taught academic skills and English for Academic Purposes in several UK universities since 2008 after teaching abroad from 1997-2004. Having completed all my Postgraduate study whist working, I understand what it’s like and can provide advice on time management. I can provide support in areas such as critical reading/listening and note taking, paraphrasing, avoiding plagiarism, referencing (including OSCOLA for Law students) and improving presentation skills and dissertation writing.

I have worked with a broad range of students across mainstream and specialist provision for the last 15 years, with a focus on learning differences and disability. I have a background in Psychology with Counselling, and I can work with you to develop your study mindset so that you can successfully engage with a variety of academic skills.

I can collaborate with you to develop your reflective practice, critical evaluation of research and organisation skills, among other key proficiencies that will support your success at university.
